Dear business owner,
Is your business turning valuable, potential customers away?
You'll have to excuse me. I had meant for this edition of the Alaska411
newsletter to explain some of the intricacies and pitfalls of
yellow pages advertising for the small business owner.
However, something happened today that I think needs to be addressed.
I called a towing company owner in Fairbanks, Alaska by mistake. He had a name similar
to one of our customers. Upon speaking to this gentleman and learning that I
had the wrong company, I took the initiative and offered him free advertising
in our online yellow pages.
This gentleman declined the offer of free advertising. This was odd to me
because no one has ever declined our free advertising.
Whereupon this business owner explained that "no one uses the internet to get a tow
truck when their car breaks down". I started to explain... but he said "I don't want your advertising".
Click, he hung up.
That's perfectly OK, He thought I was just another salesman trying to sell him something, and
has every right to be abrupt.
However, what I was about to explain to him was that there are more mobile
devices now, with internet capability, than PC's. The growth of the mobile device market is explosive. Mobile device owners are flocking to the
mobile yellow pages and other services in droves, and the numbers will continue to grow.
If your car, truck, or RV breaks down, you can call 411 and get one or two phone numbers, or not, for
and average of $1.25 to $1.60 per call. 411 information is not what it used to be.
Most 411 service, in an attempt by the phone companies to cut costs, is outsource to a few
national providers. Maybe you'll have to call several times, and still not get the information
you need, but you will pay for it anyway.
You can access the internet mobile yellow pages from any cell phone, PDA, Blackberry, iPhone, or
mobile device as easily as calling 411. The difference is that the mobile yellow pages will
cost nothing, and give you all of the available choices immediately.
The growth in the mobile market is explosive. Don't ignore these customers.
Owners of many businesses must consider this form of advertising or allow their competitors
to benefit. Businesses that advertise in internet directories have a big advantage over businesses
that go it alone with just their company website, which generall appear in just a few search engine categories.
For businesses that ignore the internet, they lose any share of the 25% of printed phone book users that

of search categories on the major search engines. Try searching for "411 anything" on any of the
search engines, the "anything" being anything to do with your business.
The moral here is: DON'T REFUSE FREE ADVERTISING!
